appearance
As a human: tall, broad, and a great head of black hair with an impressive mustache and beard. Incredible posture and nearly always smiling. Can't seem to shake Victorian era fashion but he's doing his best to fit in.

As a hellhound: fiery-eyed, enormous pitch-black dog that smells faintly of brimstone. Teeth are sharp for optimal drag-them-to-hell purposes.
height 6'4"
build broad shouldered but average
eyes brown/red
hair thick and black
abilities
species-related abilities
As a demonic being created for the sole purpose of doing the bidding of higher demons to capture souls and executing the edicts of hell, Newton has super-strength, enhanced agility and speed, invisibility, hellfire breathing (to burn souls), precognition related to death, and teleportation. Newton's true form is a dog, but he's able to change his appearance and settled on this one for the last several hundred years.

It's programmed in his very being to be relentless, to complete "missions" no matter what (you can run, you can hide...) and he's difficult to kill unless by higher celestial beings. While "immortal" as a demon, hellhounds can still be weakened by salt, iron, and other holy traps and weapons.
bonus ability
Sleep inducement: Newton can put people to sleep by touch. He's not really sure how it works, and it could be anything from a quick 2-minute nap, to a good 10 hours. He's not sure of the parameters and that has him worried...
mundane abilities
Certified veterinarian: has been trained in all manners of cryptid and animal biology, which he honed further after his stint as a totally normal country veterinarian before becoming a vet for Quest.

Outdoorsy: prefers to be outside more than anything and enthusiastically devoted himself to human things like camping, hiking, picknicking, geology, bird watching, and delightful romps through fields

Cycling: Bicycles are a marvelous human invention and Newton enjoyed crossing counties on his velocipede in the 19th century

The Arts: loves poetry and the theatre; was trying to learn how to paint because he desperately wants to be artistic, but he's absolutely garbage. Still commits!
background

"Newton" wasn't born so must as he just existed, created (like other hellhounds) for the sole purpose of carrying out the edicts of Hell, protecting Hell, and dragging claiming souls for Hell. He had a Demon master to whom he carried out orders for: a crossroads demon dealing in the bartering of souls. For a while Newton was the perfect pet, relentless, vicious, and dogged in his missions.

But "Newton" had always been more sensitive and the longer he spent with humans and supernaturals (not all terrible people, some just desperate and foolish) the more he questioned his role in all of this. All hellhounds are branded by their master which controls them, ensures obedience, and can call them back to Hell. Loyalty to Hell was in his marrow, but maybe impossibly "Newton" had developed enormous empathy. He became more of a problem than a pet, an embarrassment to his Master in the local Hell dogpark.

During a soul retrieval, "Newton" was given his opening. A [TBD] powerful sorcerer offered to sever his brand with a magical tattoo of their own, preventing "Newton" from being called back and giving him the freedom he wanted in exchange for the sorcerer's life. It was an easy, though terrifying decision, and "Newton" ran as fast as he could towards a so-called normal life.

Settling in Northern England the hellhound took the name Newton and with all the enthusiasm of a sheltered child finally breaking free, he really committed (a little too enthusiastically maybe) to being "human." It was not without its hiccups as he figured out this whole appearing and behaving as a human bit, and it may have inspired widespread paranoia and folktales about Black Dogs and Barghest in England, but he got it eventually! Animals and creatures like him had always fascinated him and he took those discovery years as an opportunity to learn all he could so that he could help heal them. Becoming a veterinarian felt like penance for the violence of dragging souls to Hell. He even practiced for a brief time as a human veterinarian to round out his knowledge. He loved animals and he felt like he finally found his purpose.

Still, the brand beneath the tattoo was a looming reminder that this could all go away. Until one day it disappeared entirely with the death of the Demon. Did Newton run with this as him being totally safe from being dragged back to Hell himself? Yes he did, and he's maybe gotten a little too comfortable with it. It gave him the confidence though to join Quest, help more people and creatures, meet some of the best friends of his demonic life (including the unrequited love of his existence 😍) and be happy. He would die for any of them, and he'd die for the creatures that Scantlebury had kidnapped - of course he'd become a double agent!

And then they got snowglobed.
